CJG Rijnmond (Centrum voor Jeugd en Gezin) is the go-to platform for parents, caregivers and young people aged 0 to 18 in the Rotterdam-Rijnmond region, offering guidance on parenting, growth and health, alongside courses, appointments and vaccinations. I worked on the site at Accessible Minds (formerly Bubblefish), first as an intern and later as a part-time web developer, picking up UI work, forms and day-to-day maintenance across the platform.
The site was built on Craft CMS, with templates in Twig and backend logic in PHP. That stack shaped a lot of the day-to-day work: content and layout structure lived in Twig templates, backed by PHP.
What I worked on
Most of my time went into building and refining UI elements used across the site, from cards and filters to the location and course overview pages that help visitors find what's relevant to them quickly, implemented as Twig templates and partials. I also built and maintained forms, an important part of a platform where people need to book appointments, sign up for courses, or get in touch with a CJG professional, wiring up validation and submission handling in PHP.
Beyond new features, a large part of the role was ongoing maintenance: updating content, keeping the site running smoothly, and fixing bugs as they came up. Because CJG Rijnmond serves a wide, non-technical audience across dozens of municipalities, small issues in search, filtering or the locations overview could have an outsized impact on whether people found the help they were looking for.
Search and contact
I also worked on parts of the search results page, making sure filtered results stayed readable and useful across the different content types on the site (locations, courses, pages, news). On the contact side, I helped maintain the overview of ways to reach CJG Rijnmond, keeping content and status indicators in sync with how the organisation actually operates.
Outcome
This was one of my earlier roles in web development, and it taught me a lot about working on a public-facing platform used by a broad, real audience rather than a niche one. Small, careful UI and content work added up to a site that stayed reliable and easy to use for parents and professionals across the region.
