PostNL
Case study for PostNL project, building a headless commerce platform
As one of the front-end developers on the PostNL headless commerce project at Youwe, I focused on architecting and building the user-facing layers of a sophisticated multi-channel platform—leveraging Next.js and GraphQL for flexibility and performance.
Key Contributions
- Design System Integration:
Ensured consistency and scalability by implementing and extending Stamp, PostNL's design system, throughout the React/Next.js front-end. Leveraged Stamp components and guidelines to deliver a coherent user experience across all portals. - Next.js Architecture & Implementation:
Developed and optimized the React/Next.js front-end with static generation, server-side rendering, and API routes, providing rapid page loads and SEO benefits. Implemented modular component architecture to ensure reusability and scalability across PostNL’s B2B and B2C portals. - GraphQL Integration:
Led the development and maintenance of GraphQL endpoints, connecting the frontend seamlessly to the Adobe Commerce backend and real-time SAP S/4HANA ERP data. Utilized Apollo Client for efficient data querying, caching, and state management, improving both developer experience and application responsiveness. - Performance Engineering:
Applied smart caching strategies, query batching, and incremental static regeneration to optimize data flow and minimize server load—even during high-traffic periods. Proactively monitored and tuned performance, achieving platform load speeds of under one second for thousands of concurrent users. - Enterprise-Scale UI:
Built and maintained reusable, highly performant UI components to support millions of users and thousands of orders. Integrated business logic for complex e-commerce flows, such as dynamic shop-in-shops, campaign landing pages, and personalized account areas. - Cross-functional Collaboration:
Worked closely with backend developers, QA, and DevOps to design the headless architecture, contribute to automation and failover strategies, and ensure robust reliability and security. Participated in peer reviews and knowledge-sharing sessions to maintain high code quality and consistency.
Outcome
The resulting PostNL headless platform powers seamless commerce experiences across consumer and business segments—supporting massive scale (250,000+ transactions, 1,000,000+ visitors annually) with exceptional uptime and conversion rates. The unified stack enabled a 41% reduction in IT costs, 23% more transactions processed, and a 150% increase in average order value, providing the foundation for rapid new campaign launches and ongoing business growth.
